I just got back from a much-needed vacation, and we received quite a few requests while I was gone.
With this in mind, I turned to expert Christy Curtis Buss of The Studio Art of Dance in El Segundo, California for some tips about ballroom dancing.
Here’s what she had to say:
Me:
Christy, what tips do you have for men and women competing in rhythm about weight positioning in various styles of ballroom and Latin dance?
Christy:
Well, the weight is never equal. The lead, who is usually the male, is the one who signals thru the tension in his hand or at the woman’s back. The lead should also use his weight to pull or push the partner. This is a signal of where they are going or moving.
Me:
What are some important things to keep in mind when practicing ballroom dance moves at home?
Christy:
When practicing at home, I think it’s a good idea to have some kind of DVD explaining the dance moves. This is especially helpful if you don’t have a partner to practice with.
If you do have a partner to practice with at home, then the lead should work on their signals and how they correspond to specific movements.
Me:
Thanks for the quick tips and helpful advice Christy! We really appreciate it.
