Do You Need a New Dance Schedule?

Take different dance classes to avoid boredom as a dancer.

We all have dance classes that we like less than others. For many of us, it’s ballet. For others, it’s Hip Hop. To become well-rounded dancers, we need to expose ourselves to as many dance forms and dance teachers as possible.

But sometimes, we just don’t feel like going to class. When this happens, it’s time to make some changes. After all, if you don’t want to be in dance class, you will not learn anything and end up wasting time and money.

With this in mind, here are a few tips that may help you revive your dance schedule:

  • Take some time off and try another form of exercise.

Sometimes, if we give our body and break and do something different, we appreciate dance more. Plus, if you try something new like swimming, cycling, yoga, a martial art, etc., you’ll probably work different muscles than you do in dance class and become a stronger dancer in the process.

  • Try taking the class you dislike at a different studio with a different teacher.

You may loathe your ballet class, but if you attend another studio with a different dance instructor, you may enjoy it. Sometimes, a change of environment, unique music, new people, and more can make a huge difference in how much you enjoy a class… and how much you learn.

  • Focus on a particular movement.

If you are stuck with a dance schedule you don’t like, use it to your advantage. Pick one movement you are going to work on in each class and try to perfect it. This way, you have a goal for each class in your schedule, and you won’t focus on the difficulty, the personalities around you, or other things that make you dislike the class. Also, think about what you can learn from this class and why you don’t like it. Then, challenge yourself to overcome the obstacles. You’ll become a better dancer in the process.

Get Over It!

At some point in your dance career, you will dislike your dance schedule. When this happens, make a change to revive your attitude about dance. Try a new form of exercise or take a different class at a new studio with a new teacher.

If this isn’t possible, “make lemonade from lemons.” In other words, focus on something you can work on to become a better dancer during your dreaded class, and try to get as much out of your dance schedule as possible.

We all have dance classes that we like better than others. But as professional dancers, we need to work through these feelings, focus on our technique and do what it takes to keep dancing.
