It’s that time of year when many dancers are preparing for spring and summer competitions and recitals. And along with this, you are probably thinking more about your body and swimsuit season!
Yes, as dancers, we are always thinking about our bodies and trying to improve something. This is all healthy thinking as long as you don’t get too carried away with your appearance.
After all, dance is about sharing your emotions through movement and performance.
It’s not about how skinny, tall, good looking, clear-skinned, etc. you are.
If you spend too much time focusing on your appearance, it can be easy to lose sight of why you started dancing in the first place. And while it’s important to manage your weight and look professional, it’s not o.k. if your body image becomes an obsession.
Then, you can end up focusing too much on that and not enough on perfecting your dance moves!
Remember, everyone is different. You may never be as skinny, strong or tall as other dancers. It’s more important to focus on the qualities that make you unique. Perhaps, you jump higher than anyone else, do multiple turns perfectly, have fantastic balance, or just have a nice smile.
Whatever unique qualities you have as a dancer, let them shine. This way, you’ll stand out from others, win more auditions and be the best dancer you can possibly be!
