If you want to make the most out of the dance classes you take today, follow these simple reminders:
1. Review your notes from previous classes.
If you’ve been taking notes after each dance class, go over them before you leave for the studio. There is so much to learn with dance that you’ll probably see a few things you completely forgot about!
2. Get to the studio early.
Prepare in advance and get to the studio early. This will give you time to get dressed, stretch and work on the next step…
3. Think about what you want to work on during dance class.
What do you really want to work on in the dance class you’re about to take? Maybe you always pick up your back heel before a turn, you tend to bend your legs when they should be straight, or you have a habit of looking down when you dance? Think about these things and pick one or two that you are going to work on during class. Then…
4. Focus on the things you want to improve while in dance class.
While you are warming up and doing the choreography in class, think about your notes and the things you decided to focus on. Even if you can’t get certain moves, at least you will be working on correcting bad habits and improving your technique.
5. Make a mental note of all the things you learned and write them down as soon as possible.
When the teacher gives you corrections, or if you see other dancers doing things that you like, make a mental note of what you learned. If you can’t remember everything, just try to remember three things.
Then, as soon as you can, write down what you learned in your Dance Notes when you get home. By writing them down and reviewing them before class, you’ll be more likely to fix your dance mistakes and improve your technique faster.
Dancing is a lot of fun. But if you want to be a good dancer, you need to focus on improving your skills and what you want to accomplish in each class.
There is a lot to take in so by preparing in advance, thinking about what you’re doing during class and writing down what you learned as soon as class ends, you will become a much better dancer, much faster.
Yes, it’s a lot of work. But anything worth doing in life takes some effort. And the reward will come when you beat out other dancers at your next audition or competition!

My ballet class doesn’t really work on technique. We only just work on the routine for our yearly recital. I need to be in a more technical/advanced class. What should I do?
Hi Joanne,
You definitely need to find a ballet class where you work on technique – it’s essential to becoming a good dancer. It’s time to look around for another ballet class that offers traditional training. Try asking friends, look online and see what’s in your local area.
Good luck!
