3 Ways to Improve Your Dance Technique Now

by Melanie Rembrandt on April 10, 2012

If you are working on your dance technique and don’t feel that you are getting any better, it’s time to engage outside sources to help you. Checkout these…

3 Ways to Improve Your Dance Technique Now

1. Videotape a Dance.

Whether you are in a performance or just rehearsing, have a friend videotape you dancing. Most people have a video app on their phones and can help you out with the click of the button.

Record the various moves you want to improve and then study the tape. You’ll have a better understanding of what you are doing with your entire body and be able to fix problem areas right away.

2. Ask Your Teacher for Help.

When I first started at Edge Performing Arts Center in Hollywood, there were a lot of students in class. But I was there to learn from the best and get the most out of class possible (After all, I was spending my own money on classes each month, and it took me an hour to get there every day.).

With all of the students, it was easy to get lost in the crowd. But I didn’t let this stop me. I introduced myself to the instructor and told her to go ahead and yell at me when I made mistakes. I event had a shirt made with my name on it so she would remember my name and know who to yell at! This showed her I was serious. Plus, I got tons of valuable corrections in class that I used to improve my technique immediately.

Remember. You’re there to learn, and if you don’t ask for help, you won’t get it!

3. Watch others.

When you are waiting to go across the floor and for your group to dance in class, what are you doing?

You should be reviewing the choreography and looking at the other dancers.

What are they doing to make the dance look better?

Do they move their head and arms in a certain way?

Study what the good dancers in your class are doing. You can also ask a friend in class to watch you do a certain move and give their criticisms.

Reach out for help with your dancing!

Instead of just going to class, dancing and going home, get help from others to improve your dance technique. Videotape yourself dancing and see what you are doing wrong. Ask an instructor to give you all the corrections possible and learn from your mistakes. Also, watch other dancers carefully. What are they doing right? What are they doing wrong?

You will always be improving your dance technique so why not use all of the sources possible to do so? It doesn’t cost anything to watch and get help from others. But by taking the time to do so, you can see significant improvements in your dancing fast!
