Are you a dancer who gets nervous at a new dance class?

New Dance Class Nerves

by Melanie Rembrandt on June 20, 2011

Last week, I walked into my advanced ballet class, and a brand new dancer was waiting for the lesson to begin.

It seems that she drove by the studio a few times and decided to take class. She didn’t have ballet shoes with her, but she had a great attitude. I’m sure she was nervous when she saw how small the class was, but you’d never know it. She ended up doing a great job, and she was a natural at it. Well, good for her!

New Class Nerves are Natural.

We all know how nerve wracking it can be to take a new dance class. You’re not sure what to expect, how the other dancers will treat you, how hard the class will be, etc. Even if you watch a class in advance and prepare, you can still be anxious.

No worries! Just remember these simple tips to help you get through:

  • Listen to the instructor.

When your dance teacher gives you directions, be sure to follow them. He or she will try to guide you through class so be sure you are all ears.

  •  Watch what the other dancers do.

Check to see where the other dancers in class stand and move. There will probably be a pecking order so stand in back, and try to stay out of the way of the other dancers.

  • Maintain a positive attitude.

You will probably get frustrated not knowing what to expect or trying to learn new steps and routines. Just do the best you can do and stay positive. After all, you had the guts to try the new class, and most dancers don’t even get that far!

Now, if you are going to take a new class, I highly suggest that you prepare in advance. See:

This way, you will fit in a little bit more, have a better idea of what to expect and know the level of the class you are entering.

And at some point, we will all need to try a new class. It’s part of being a good dancer. But if you prepare, do your best and try to learn something, you’ll have a positive experience and improve your technique. Now, go try that new class!
