Now that 2014 is in full gear, what does that mean to you as a dancer?

Yes, you know all about resolutions and how most people break them by February each year. With this in mind, why not make goals instead of resolutions?

Here are a few tips to start your year off the right way and accomplish more with your dance career:

1. Define your future.

What do you really want to accomplish as a dancer?

It’s one thing to dream about being on Broadway, dancing in a film or television show or opening your own studio. It’s another thing to write down exactly what you want and actually take action on it. Your dreams may be big, but don’t let that stand in your way.

Figure out each step you need to take to get closer to your dream. Write down goals for this week, this month, this year, and the next five years.

Set timelines and try to finish each step by each deadline. You’ll be amazed at how your dreams will start to materialize!

2. Work hard.

Well, I hate to say it, but even if you think you’re a good dancer, there is always someone better out there. Being a professional dancer is a lot of work.

You need to take dance classes, practice and study your dance technique EVERY DAY. Just dancing around your house or with friends does not count.

Don’t kid yourself. If you really want to be a dancer, you’ve got a lot of hard work ahead of you. But if you reach your goals, it’s completely worth it!

3. Go for it!

With all the work involved in becoming a dancer, or opening your own studio, the process can be overwhelming. Plus, many naysayers will tell you that you can’t do it.

If you really want to have a career in dance, don’t let anyone or anything get in your way. Focus on your goals and stay positive!

Being a dancer is a lot of work, and you’ve got to expect many hours of frustration, physical and mental exhaustion, pain, and negativity from others. It’s a very difficult career, but if you really want to be part of it, all of your hard work will pay off!

Reduce Stress with a Simple Word

Well, the year is winding down, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner.

Many people in the U.S. love this holiday because they get time off from work to spend with friends and family, eat lots of good food and get a jumpstart on their holiday shopping.

I love Thanksgiving because of all these reasons, but there’s more to it for me.

Usually, things are crazy at work this time of year, and I spend long hours in front of my computer.

By the time Thanksgiving comes around, I’m usually VERY ready for a break (you can probably relate!). Thanksgiving gives me a time to reflect — and what else? — be thankful.

This may sound hokey, but it really inspires me to move forward with my goals. I note all of the things I’m thankful for in my life, and the stress melts away.

In fact, this works so well that I use this process throughout the year.

Being Thankful Can Help You More Ways Than You Know.

When I start to feel overwhelmed and stressed, I stop and think of ten things I’m thankful for. It helps me focus on what is truly important in my life.

Try it. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your mindset changes.

Suddenly, the frustration in dance class, looming tax payments, big meetings, and more seem less intimidating.

Thanksgiving is a time to thank those in your life who have helped you become the person you are today. It’s also a time to reflect on what’s important in life and all of the things you can be thankful for – and this is a wonderful thing.

So wonderful, in fact, that I think it’s wise to think about Thanksgiving every day. Thank the people around you and be grateful for what you have whenever possible.

This process will help you focus on what’s truly important in your life, help reduce stress, and show others that you appreciate their kindness!

The summer is coming to a close, and it’s time to look at your dance schedule for the fall. If you are new to dance, you are probably excited about your future training… and a little bit nervous.

How can you deal with this excitement and nervousness?

Figure out what you are going to wear to dance class in advance.

This will remove one of your stressors and help you feel more confident in class. Plus, you won’t have to worry about what you’re wearing, and you can concentrate on your training. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Call the studio.

Simple. Call the studio and ask the instructor what students wear to class. They may have a specific dress code so be sure to find out. And if you need something that you can’t afford, ask if they know of any students who have used shoes or used clothes you can have. They may even have some items for you in the lost and found!

2. Visit the studio or go online.

If you really want a good idea of what the students where to the dance classes you are going to take, visit the studio and look at what the dancers are wearing. Most studios have a waiting area where you can watch the classes. Not only will you be able to see the dance techniques you’ll be taught, but you can also see first-hand what the other students are wearing.

Also go to the dance studio’s website. Many times, the studios will post videos of their studio and dancers. In the videos, you’ll be able to see what the other students are wearing.

3. Visit a thrift shop, look online or call other studios.

If you know you need a certain outfit for dance class but have limited funds, visit your local thrift shops. Many times, you’ll find used dance shoes and almost new, workout clothes. The best part is, you won’t pay much, and it doesn’t really matter because you’ll just be working out in the clothes and shoes anyway!

Another way to find used dance shoes and clothing is to look online. Search for the kind of shoes and clothing you need on eBay or Amazon and see if you can’t find used or almost new clothes and shoes in your size and within your budget. If that doesn’t work, call all of the dance studios in your area and ask if they have any used dance shoes you can buy. Also ask if they have recommendations about where you can get affordable, dance clothes.

Starting a new dance class can be exciting, but it can also be expensive. To cut down on your nerves, prepare what you are going to wear in advance. Also, look for clothes and shoes you can afford. Make the effort to contact the dance studio and look online for bargains. This way, you’ll find some great outfits and dance shoes to wear to class without ruining your budget. And most important, you’ll fee more confident as you start your new dance classes.

Dancers, A Six-Letter Word to Use in Dance Class

Will you say it today?

The holidays are coming, and that means you are probably preparing for “Nutcracker” and year-end performances.

Your life will get hectic with long rehearsals, extensive dance-classes, costume fittings, and school work… not to mention the activities you have planned with family and friends.
But while all of this is going on, there is something very important to remember… the little word with big results –

THANKS.

– Keep a thankful attitude.

When things get tough during dance classes, auditions or at rehearsals, give yourself a break. Remind yourself how lucky you are to be able to dance, and be thankful that you are healthy enough to move around.

– Send a thank you to the people who help you.

Take a moment to write a thank-you note to your teachers, parents, friends, and others who provide support and encouragement so that you can do what you love to do… dance. And while an e-mail is nice, a handwritten note means so much more.

– Offer a surprise treat.

If you are getting ready for a big rehearsal, take some healthy snacks or drinks to the dance studio to share with your fellow dancers during a break. It will be a nice surprise for them and show your appreciation for their collaboration and hard work.

A simple “thank you” goes a long way!

During this holiday season, it can be easy to forget how lucky we are to be able to dance.

When things get rough during rehearsals or class, remember to have a thankful mindset, and make a special effort to thank those around you who support your dancing.

Giving thanks is a simple thing to do, but it can mean a lot. Give it a try and see if it doesn’t help make your busy day a little better!

A Cheat Sheet to Beat Dance Frustration

Are you Frustrated with Dance?

If you’re like me, it can be easy to get frustrated in dance class. Sometimes, you work really hard to perfect a dance move, but it seems like you are actually getting worse in the process! When this happens, try to turn your frustration into something positive.

Here’s a Frustration Cheat Sheet for Help:

F Fun! Don’t forget that dance is supposed to be something you enjoy doing!
R Relax The world is not going to end if you can’t get this particular move. Take a moment.
De-stress, and then start practicing again.
U Unite Are other dancers around you frustrated too? Unite with them to help each other out. Go over your frustrating moves together so you can all feel better about what you’re doing and improve.
S Share If you feel like screaming when you get home from rehearsal, punch a pillow and scream! Then, share your frustrations with a friend or family member. You’ll feel better about what you’re doing and be able to calm down a bit so you can move forward.
T Take a break. If you work on one particular dance move for a long time, take a break. Get a drink of water. Go outside. Eat a snack. Let your mind wander, and give your body some time off. Then, you’ll be ready to go back into the studio and try again.
R Rest Maybe you’ve been working too hard all day, and it’s time to stop already. Go home. Get some sleep, and start over again the next day refreshed and ready to go!
A Allow yourself to learn. Don’t get so caught up in not getting a particular dance step that you don’t learn in the process. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them.
T Take notes. If you can’t seem to get a particular dance step, take notes. Make a video of yourself doing the moves, have a friend critique you and write down how you can improve.
I Imagine Think about yourself doing the steps perfectly in your head. The mental image will help you dance better and keep you in a positive mindset.
O Own it! Take control of your body and fail miserably. Dance big, and own the choreography. This way, you, and others, will see what you need to fix. Then, fix it and own your dance moves!
N Never give up! Keep trying. Work through your frustration and keep dancing. If you keep practicing, one day, you will just get it…. I promise!
